Mouth Guards

Prevention is always better than a cure so..................................Wear a Mouth guard!

According to the Australian Dental Association Guidelines on prevention and management of oral injuries, one of the best sports protection devices is a professionally fitted, upper jaw mouth guard, where precision fit and quality materials offer effective injury protection. The need to wear a mouthguard should be assessed by a dentist based on risk factors, including an individual's sporting activity and dental anatomy.

Sports where the use of mouthguards is strongly recommended include:

  • Boxing and martial arts
  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Squash

Sports where protective equipment other than mouthguards is worn include:

  • Ice-hockey
  • Hockey
  • Cricket
  • Roller-blading
  • Cycling

Sports where protective equipment is not normally worn but where mouthguard use could be justified under certain circumstances include:

  • Diving
  • Surf-boarding
  • Skiing

Sports where mouthguard use would be impractical or not warranted due to low risk of injury, e.g.:

  • Swimming
  • Athletics
  • Aerobics
  • Rowing

The Australian Dental Association Guidelines policy statement on mouth guards recommends players should:

  • Wear only a professionally fitted mouthguard
  • Ensure teeth are clean before inserting your mouthguard
  • Wear your mouthguard at training, practice and during the game
  • Your mouthguard is custom-made and so can only be used by you
  • Your mouthguard should be checked annually by your dentist to ensure that it fits
  • Clean the mouthguard with cold water immediately after each use
  • Store it in a clean, rigid and sealable plastic container
  • Keep your mouthguard away from sunlight and heat
  • Consult your dentist if the mouthguard becomes soiled
